Weird science and Liberty Days. The perfect school vacation combo. This week at Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Seaport.

Vacation week. Here are a couple of highlights off our region’s big list of vacation ideas.

Head over to Mystic Aquarium for their Weird Science exhibit, with activities every day (including what happens when you put soap in the microwave–don’t try this at home!). The kids zone will have interactive tables with hands-on activities, scavenger hunts and tons of learning opportunities, and some really cool insights on beluga whales. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and there’s no extra cost beyond admission.

After they’re weird-scienced out, head down the street to Mystic Seaport, which is offering free admission for kids all week. This is an awesome deal, so take advantage of it. Events are based on what sailors do on their days off, also known as Liberty Days. Make your own banjo, tour the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship and check out a sailor’s sea chest. There’s also a musical exhibit, Neptune’s Orchestra, and the daily program Jupiter and the Late Winter Sky at the planetarium. They’ll need sustenance at that point, but don’t worry. Kids 10 and under eat free at the Seaport’s restaurant. Now that’s liberty!
