Summer is heading straight for eastern Connecticut, and that means the start of a new season at Ocean Beach Park in New London. An area favorite with easy parking, Ocean Beach is not only about hitting the sand with a good book and swimming at your leisure. With an 18-hole mini golf course, water slides, an Olympic-size pool, rides, food, and more, it’s a fun place to go.

When friends with kids visit, the triple water slide and spray park are first on the list, followed, of course, by the video arcade and maybe some rides. There’s plenty to keep the kids occupied, and when they have been sufficiently tired out and focused on their ice cream cones, the adults can crash on the sand and enjoy the sun and water, or stop for a meal at the Sandbar Cafe (a seat on the deck is the best). Or, stroll the boardwalk — always a favorite summer activity. If you’re really motivated, you can visit the Workout World on the grounds. Yes, it’s exercise, but if you have to do it, what better place than overlooking the ocean?

Stay tuned to the beach’s website for the summer schedule. Concerts, movie nights, a weekly cruise night and even magic shows are part of the Ocean Beach Park experience.

If you’re not really into the amusement park or mini golf and just want to sit on the sand, the beach itself is gorgeous. Bring a cooler, a good book, and your Ipod, and plan on spending the day relaxing and swimming in the Sound.

PS. That floating home in the distance? It’s the very cool  Thames River Ledge Lighthouse. If you want to get up close take a cruise.  The Mystic Whaler offers a great adventure the whole family will love.
