The woman. The legend. The Kate.
I had lived here for four years before I realized that Katharine Hepburn had been a resident of Old Saybrook – so much for my pop culture knowledge. And I only learned this because someone told me about The Kate (also known as The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center), a cultural arts performing theater featuring operas, music, theater and more. The elegant, historic building has been renovated and includes a 250-seat theater and museum dedicated to the lovely and talented Ms. Hepburn. The museum is unique in that it offers a glimpse of not only the actress, but the Old Saybrook resident, friend and neighbor.
The building itself was built in 1911 as a theater and later became a municipal building. It was renovated back to its original use and reopened as the Center in 2009, and it’s now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
The Kate is unique to our area and appeals to so many: theater lovers, music lovers, movie buffs, arts and culture junkies. The event listing is varied too, with options for adults and children: film festivals, music, speakers and more.
This is a great find in this small coastal town, truly enriching entertainment. The Kate is an invaluable part of the local art and theater scene, and anyone who has ever loved an old movie should stop by and pay homage to one of the greatest actresses of all time.
