Experience Life at Sea.
If you’re looking for history, the Mystic Seaport should already be on your list. You could take two days to see everything (your ticket will actually let you back in one more time within a week so hang onto it).
Take your time walking the grounds, get out on the water and enjoy enveloping your family in some of the most interesting, sea-faring history in the area.
The 19th Century Village features role players to teach you what life was like back in the day. You’ll meet whalers, oilers, and stonemasons, along with the women of the town.
Your kids will love climbing aboard the old ships and and other old seafaring vessels on display. The Charles W. Morgan (pictured above) is the last wooden whaleship in the world. “She” is currently being restored.
Make sure you take a ride on the Sabino, another historic landmark ship, a great way to spend a summer evening pre-dinner– or get out of the sun for an hour midday. The Sabino is coal powered and kids will love watching the goings on down below while you take in the oh-so-New England scenery.
The best part about the Seaport is the interactivity. Learning is never boring here, and the adults will certainly walk away with new historical knowledge — I did. Kids can enjoy being kids — running between exhibits and all of the hands-on activities. You can also take them out on the water. Here is a map of the grounds.
Look for The Planetarium, Discovery Barn, Children’s Museum and Map Spot. Kids can make their own maps, learn about the sky, and see what life was really like out on the sea. There is also a smaller children’s building which offers wonderful dramatic play opportunities and crafts.
Eat at one of the awesome restaurants too (I’m not sure who eats what they cook on the hearth), or grab a snack at the Cafe and Bake Shop and eat outside on the dock by the water — the restaurants are now run by the local and very yummy Mystic Market.
Travel tip: If you want to visit downtown Mystic during your stay, the Seaport offers a water taxi to and from the downtown. No need to get back in your car! I love that especially with kids in tow.
Horse drawn carriage rides are also available, great in the day or for a romantic night out followed by dinner.
Get all the info, along with a full calendar of events (and there are loads of special ones), at www.mysticseaport.org. This is an outdoor museum, meaning you will be walking outside between exhibits, so dress for the weather and for walking.
I wish you a glorious sunny day!
