Blueberries, Raspberries and More, Oh My! Where to Pick-Your-Own in Mystic Country
In true New England fashion, Connecticut is teeming with places to pick your fruits and berries yourself. Here is a full listing of places to pick your own, summer through fall. We’re fortunate to have choices in nearly every town, and the pickings are always fabulous.
Holmberg Orchards, located in Gales Ferry (not far from the Mohegan Sun Casino) is a favorite of mine, not only for the pick your own component but the delightful farm store with fresh veggies, delicious pies and other treats, and even snacks for your canine friends. Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, nectarines, apples, pears, raspberries, pumpkins and cut flowers are all on the list beginning in June and moving through October. They also sell hard cider and delicious wines from local wineries, soaps and lotions from local vendors, and even prepared foods for a quick dinner.
Maple Lane Farm and Market in Preston is another beauty, with berries, pumpkins, and even Christmas trees to pick. The grounds are beautiful, too. We went just this past weekend; the bushes were loaded! I’ve been popping them all week.
Further down I-95, Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme is a wonderful choice for pick your own, with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches and more. The farm stand is wonderful too – I like to pick up my fall mums there. They make homemade doughnuts, too – not to be missed!
A few other favs, these in the northeast corner include: Buell’s Orchard and Farmstand in Eastford, and Horse Listeners Orchard in Ashford. There are MANY more so take a look at the link above to see if there is something close to you.
One important tip! Call ahead if you’ve got a hankering for a specific berry or fruit. Ask if it’s in season and being picked before you head out. This is one outing that’s oh-so-rewarding and of course, delicious!
