Get Some Sun. Mohegan Sun.

If you’ve seen the catchy ads on TV lately, Mohegan Sun is probably in the forefront of your mind when you think eastern Connecticut casino. If you’re planning a visit, you won’t be disappointed. Mohegan is a great place to go, whether you’re looking for gaming, a show, or just a fancy dinner.

Mohegan is a favorite destination when we just want to get out, walk around, grab a drink, Starbucks or a Krispy Kreme doughnut and be part of a crowd. The restaurants are fabulous — Bobby Flay’s Bar Americain, Todd English’s Tuscany, Michael Jordan’s Steak house, the buffet, the bakeries. Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville is a fun stop with a great overall atmosphere, and awesome drinks (try the Wildberry Margarita).

The kids like Pepe’s pizza, Bobby’s Burger Palace, Johnny Rockets and Ben and Jerry’s ice cream (check out the scooper  tees — so cute — cows playing poker). And yes, I really do go there with the kids on occasion — the gambling areas are all restricted to those over 21 years of age, and they are VERY strict about that. We just do everything else and a lot of people watching.  The setting is fabulous.

The shops are classy and  fun to wander through: Coach, Tiffany, Puma, Tommy Bahama, Brookstone, Trail Blazer and more. We have spent hours there without playing one slot machine- although I do like to try my luck at the dollar slots when the kids aren’t with me; $20 max for me.

Shows are top-notch. I’ve seen some of my favorite musicians there, from Stevie Nicks to Bon Jovi. They have theater performances, comedy, small shows, even a great ongoing author series.

And, of course, the gaming — when you are without the kids. Choose the Casino of the Wind, Casino of the Sky, or Casino of the Earth, all with tables and slots. If you happen to choose the Casino of the Wind, make sure you check out the animated water wall — very cool. The Casino of the Sky has the Planetarium Dome and Wombi Rock, also a great sight to see.

Stay at the hotel and experience the whole package (or stay somewhere in Mystic Country and drive in).

This is fun that’s very different from the rest of Mystic Country. Enjoy it but be sure to get out and see some of the coast and country. You’ll love it too.

Here’s a PDF Map of the entire Mohegan Sun property. Get your bearings before you go, especially if you plan to eat before a show!
