A little taste of Mexico.

Good Mexican food is always a treat to find, whether it’s a new restaurant in your own area or a highly recommended place you stumble upon during vacation. When it comes to Mexican, I love the old favorites – enchiladas, burritos, quesadillas, and some great chips and salsa. But we have some great places with unique menu items for the adventurous Mexican food eater! If you’re in the area, I have a few favorites to recommend:

Milagro Cafe, Stonington

A fairly recent addition to the wonderful Borough, Milagro Cafe is perfect if you’re looking for a small place with atmosphere, great drinks and fabulous tortilla chips. The margaritas are some of the best around, so if you’re coming here for a drink, plan on walking home. The food, of course, is delish! (860) 535-8178

Ortega’s, Groton

Great menu, fabulous chimichangas and the chile relleno is wonderful! (860) 405-1275.

Turtle’s Taco Shop, Putnam

Another newer addition to the area, Turtle’s is one of Putnam’s new favorite restaurants for Mexican food lovers. Big portions, vegetarian options, and inexpensive – what more could you ask for?

The above are some of my personal bests. Cuckoo’s Nest in Old Saybrook, Coyote Flaco in Mansfield and Fiesta Cinco de Mayo in Williamantic all got reader’s choice bests in Connecticut Magazine’s BESTS issue (Jan. 2011) so add those to the list as well.

I’m hearing good things about Casa Mariachi in Putnam as well!
