Our Rich Nautical History Comes Alive at the Submarine Force Museum
Here in Mystic Country, we’re known for our shopping, our attractions, our dining, and our gorgeous coastline and countryside. What many people may not realize is the rich nautical history we are fortunate to have at our fingertips.
We are a Navy community, proud home of the New London Submarine Base in Groton. Parts of that naval history are captured at the Submarine Force Museum, with more than 33,000 submarine artifacts, 20,000 historical documents and 30,000 photos.
Visitors can also step into history on a tour of the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered submarine. It’s quite an experience to walk the pier and board this ship. If you have children interested in submarines, you won’t be able to pull them away. They’ll be enthralled with the components of the ship, like the periscopes in the Attack Center, the Torpedo Room and the sailors’ living quarters.
It’s so humbling to see how sailors live when they’re at sea, and the Nautilus certainly provides that.
History buffs will love the library and archives portion of the museum. Books, periodicals and newspapers are here, but even better are the personal papers collected from the submarine officers and crew, allowing a personal perspective to the historical.
There are also special events at the museum. Check their website often to see the schedule.
And don’t forget to stop by the gift shop and pick up your copy of U.S. Navy Monopoly – if you’re a Monopoly collector or have a relative in the Navy, this is perfect.
Don’t deny yourself the opportunity to learn about some of our Navy’s greatest moments. You’ll leave with new appreciation for those who serve our country.

[...] Submarines are also built built here along this river, and if you’re lucky you might see a sub coming in or going on a tour of duty (sightings are rare but exciting as there are no schedules for these for security reasons).
